A Year of Mxogyny
On the 9th June 2019 Mxogyny will celebrate its first birthday. In the first 12 months the site has published over 140 pieces of work and engaged with an audience from over 90 different countries – spreading a message of inclusivity and empowerment through our poetry, art and writing. As the publication continues to grow, we hope to uphold its place as a safe online space for marginalised voices and extend our values to a wider community by reaching an even larger group of contributors and readers.
In a timely announcement, we are delighted to inform you that Mxogyny has been awarded with the Ellie Maxwell Award of 2019 as selected by Firefly International. The organisation promotes values that we admire – supporting locally-led projects in regions affected by conflict, with a focus on creating inclusive places wherein young people can thrive. Firefly International was founded by Ellie Maxwell: a University of Edinburgh graduate and a social activist who sadly passed away at the age of 31. Her charity-focused career and commitment to socio-cultural developments remains an inspiration to us all, and we are honoured to collaborate with an organisation that continues her legacy through the work they do with young people in both Bosnia and Syria.
Firefly International described our publication as “a platform which hopes to connect stories from the UK and beyond, and to transform any self-doubt due to gender or rejection of gender into creativity, beauty and liberation.” To hear such positive comments only motivates our team to continue providing an online space for the meaningful work that we’re given, which is so often provided by contributors from all over the world. The award itself highlights our reach to external socio-cultural initiatives that aim to elevate groups who are so often silenced, and for that we are extremely grateful. We hope to use this opportunity to grow stronger bonds with organisations who align with our own values, and further extend Mxogyny’s reach to audiences that will find comfort in the stories that we share. We would like to thank all of the team – our contributors and our readers – for making this platform a place where vulnerability and safety can be felt in the same online space. We hope to continue to empower more voices that go unrepresented in today’s media.
